Satirical Drawings

Quick sketches and drawings that illustrated joyful, critical, or amusing scenes were created during the New Kingdom, mostly at Deir el-Medina in Thebes.

Artists or artisans drew these sketches on the rocks or on flakes of stones or pieces of papyri.

They might have been drawn, as our modern caricature or cartoon, to create joy and laughter.

In some cases, the drawings are thought to be intended to criticize the political situation by depicting animals in the sketches instead of human beings. By using animals in the drawings, the artists avoided being accused of making fun of the kings and masters.
