Shawabti figures may originally have been sculpted from a strong kind of wood called shawab in the Egyptian language, thus the name shawabtis.
In the New Kingdom, any number of these shawabti figurines, up to 401, were placed in tombs. The shawabtis, according to Spell Number Six of the Book of the Dead, undertake any required work in the hereafter in place of the deceased.
