Oils and Ointments in Ancient Egypt

The ancient Egyptians produced oils and ointments used in cooking, rituals, cosmetics, lighting, heating, and mummification. They imported oil from Syria and Libya and resins and seeds from African regions. Oils were extracted from fragrant flowers too, by pressing or boiling.

Scenes of making oils are depicted in wall decorations from tombs. The names of oils are also known from the offering lists on wall decorations.

The remains of oils were found in vases and containers, especially those from the tomb of Tutankhamun.
