Legend of the Famine of King Senefru

A legend is inscribed in sunk relief on the Famine Stela on the island of Seheil at Aswan. It was created in the Ptolemaic period, around 196 BC, and tells of a famine that resulted when the inundation ceased for seven long years during the time of King Senefru of the Fourth Dynasty, around 2650 BC.

The text explains how the priests persuaded the king to make offerings to Khnum, the god of the waters at Aswan, and to provide his temple with estates.

The legend speaks of the mercy of the god, who ordered the flood to take place again .
