The sistrum, called Sesheshet in Egyptian, was a ritual musical instrument or rattle, which was used also as an emblem for Hathor, goddess of motherhood, music and love.
It was thus the instrument carried and shaken, especially by the priestesses and chantress of Hathor, to announce her presence, appease her and ward off demons.
Carrying of the sistrum by a living person, or the giving of it to a deceased person, ensures the protection of the goddess and her continuous bestowal on that person of offerings in the afterlife .
