The Great Sphinx at Giza

The Great Sphinx at Giza, which stands at the foot of the plateau as its guardian, is sculpted with a lion's body and a human head.

It represents the sun god Re-Horakhty, Ra Horus of the Horizon, or Hor-em-akhet, Horus in the Horizon, who was worshiped at Giza from the Fourth Dynasty.

The face of the Great Sphinx is that of King Khafra and because it was carved between his Valley Temple and the so-called Temple of the Sphinx, it is generally assumed to have been made during his reign.

In this hybrid form, which combines the strength of the lion and the reasoning of man, the god and the king become one.
