Fashionable Women of Alexandria

Alexandrian women in Greco-Roman times were beautiful, intelligent, and elegant. They followed the latest in fashion and cosmetics and took good care of themselves. This was easy to do because Alexandria was a big commercial center that captured the world's interest in culture and trade and offered a lot of luxury as in the theater.

Fashion is related to the economic state of a city. When Alexandria was booming, it reflected on the way women revealed their beauty with garments. Historical sculpture, called Tanagra statues, show the magnificence of the garments worn by the women of the time.

They had great colors and were made of two or three pieces. One statue depicts a lady wearing a blue dress with a shawl and a hairstyle similar to one from modern times. Sometimes women would wear a blue himation, a rectangular cloth draped over the left shoulder and about the body, along with a straw hat, which was very attractive.

They obtained jewelry from India and Arabia, used kohl to beautify their eyes, and tried different hairstyles to highlight their faces. They also watched their figures but without the help of weight-loss guides or accurate scale measurements .
